Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh is said to be recovering in his Honolulu hospital bed today, after being admitted for chest pains that occurred while on vacation.
Rush’s nationally syndicated “The Rush Limbaugh Program” issued a statement earlier today saying, “Rush appreciates your prayers and well wishes, and he will keep you updated via RushLimbaugh.com.”
News agencies are reporting that it is unknown whether Limbaugh will return to his “golden microphone” on January 4th, as previously scheduled.
An ambulance was called to the Kahala Hotel and Resort just after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. Paramedics arrived to find Limbaugh, 58, sitting up in a chair, according to ABC’s Honolulu affiliate KITV.
Limbaugh’s health problems are no stranger to the public eye. In 2003 he made headlines after admitting to an addiction to pain killers. He was eventually charged with obtaining the drugs illegally and settled the charges by paying a $30,000 fine.
His on again, off again battle with cigar smoking is often mentioned on his show, alerting his listeners to his current situation by describing his fingers as “nicotine stained” or “formally nicotine stained”.
Limbaugh was briefly detained at a Dominican Republic airport for having what authorities thought was “too much Viagra” in 2006.
The Rush Limbaugh Program is the most listened to radio show in America. The show is loved by conservatives, hated by liberals, but listened to by both. In 2008 Limbaugh and Clear Channel signed an eight year, $400 million contract extension.
