Nadja Benaissa is a member of the German girl-band ‘No Angels’. The singer was recently tried and convicted of grevious bodily harm because she was HIV-positive and failed to inform two men of that fact before exposing them to the disease.

Benaissa was given a two-year suspended sentence, although she could have faced up to 10 years in prison. However, because Benaissa confessed and showed exorbitant remorse, prosecutors sought to have her sentence be as lenient as possible.

“I made a mistake. I was a coward. I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart. I wish I could turn back the clock and make it all not happen,” said Benaissa. The singer was convicted to grevious boduly harm, and attempted grevious bodily harm. She infected one man, and had unprotected sex with another.

The singer was also sentenced to perform 300 hours of community service, and she must go to counseling sessions regularly.

Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe (DAH), an AIDS awareness group, said they were unhappy with the verdict, as they are afraid that the social stigma against people with HIV will rise and fewer people will be comfortable speaking out about their disease.
