France overestimated the amount of H1N1 vaccines their country would need by more than 29 million shots, according to a statement by their Health Ministry.
Thinking that each person would need two shots of the vaccine, the French government initially paid 869 million euros ($1.25 billion) for 94 million individual vaccines. Medical experts now say that a single vaccine is all that is necessary, leaving them with a massive surplus.
“We are in contact with other countries, notably Ukraine and Mexico,” the ministry said in a statement Sunday. The statement confirmed reports that the ministry had already sold 300,000 doses to Qatar and is sealing a deal for two million more to Egypt.
They may have flu shots up the ying yang, but if you were interested in buying the vaccine at a discount, you can look somewhere else. Le Parisen newspaper says that France wants exactly what they paid, which is between 6.25 and 10 euros depending on the brand.
